The Armenian Genocide

The Armenian Genocide

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Armenian Genocide (Armenian: Հայոց ցեղասպանություն,[note 3] Hayots tseghaspanutyun), also known as the Armenian Holocaust,[9] was the Ottoman government‘s systematic extermination of 1.5 million rmenians,[note 2] mostly citizens within the Ottoman Empire.[10][11]

The starting date is conventionally held to be 24 April 1915, the day that Ottoman authorities rounded up, arrested, and deported from Constantinople (now Istanbul) to the region of Ankara 235 to 270 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders, the majority of whom were eventually murdered. The genocide was carried out during and after World War I and implemented in two phases—the wholesale killing of the able-bodied male population through massacre and subjection of army conscripts to forced labour, followed by the deportation of women, children, the elderly, and the infirm on death marches leading to the Syrian Desert. Driven forward by military escorts, the deportees were deprived of food and water and subjected to periodic robbery, rape, and massacre.[12] Other ethnic groups were similarly targeted for extermination in the Assyrian genocide and the Greek genocide, and their treatment is considered by some historians to be part of the same genocidal policy.[1][2] Most Armenian diaspora communities around the world came into being as a direct result of the genocide.[13]

Raphael Lemkin was moved specifically by the annihilation of the Armenians to define systematic and premeditated exterminations within legal parameters and coin the word genocide in 1943.[14] The Armenian Genocide is acknowledged to have been one of the first modern genocides,[15][16][17] because scholars point to the organized manner in which the killings were carried out. It is the second most-studied case of genocide after the Holocaust.[18]

Turkey denies the word genocide is an accurate term for these crimes. In recent years, Turkey has been faced with repeated calls to recognize them as genocide.[19] As of 2018[update], 29 countries have officially recognized the mass killings as genocide, as have most genocide scholars and historians.[20][21]

PTWF Director for Germany,  Dr. Michael Hesemann, has for years researched the Vatican Apostolic Archives (formerly known as the Secret Archives) for Pave the Way in an attempt to uncover evidence of the Vatican’s life-saving actions undertook to protect and save Jewish lives during WWII. In conducting this research, he discovered over 2,000 pages of primary source documents, evidencing the Ottoman Turkish Empire’s systematic murder of over 1.5 million Armenians from Constantinople. He was also able to find documentation proving that the Holy See had intervened in an attempt to stop this tragedy from occurring.

HEADLINE: VATICAN ERASES THE STATE OF ISRAEL–  A bus riding in Rome said “Come to the Holy Land visit Palestine” with the official logo of the Rome travel service (Opera Romano).  The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) immediately launched an international protest, condemning the Vatican for this. PTWF contacted the ZOA and had them retract their statement, which they did the following day. We contacted Opera Romano and the municipal police of Rome to determine this was a complete hoax, not authorized by Opera Romano.

HEADLINE: CATHOLIC CHURCH CONSIDERS ALL OF ISRAEL AS OCCUPIED TERRITORY– Vatican owned Bethlehem University stated on their FAQ website page that “visas are needed while traveling through occupied Palestinian.”

This was posted by a biased student, unbeknownst to University administration. One hour after discovering this intentional misrepresentation, PTWF contacted the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem directly. The Chancellor of the University was shocked that this information appeared on the University website and immediately ordered it removed. PTWF acted before this could be reported by the media.

HEADLINE: POPE BENEDICT XVI EMBRACES ANTI SEMITIC BREAKAWAY CULT SOCIETY OF PIUS X BY LIFTING THE BAN OF EXCOMMUNICATION

PTWF immediately called a high Justice of the Roman Rota for a definition of “lifting the ban of excommunication”. In reality, this term is simply a legal requirement in order to negotiate the return of any breakaway group that does not embrace the Second Vatican Councils Declaration of Nostre Aetate. Further, this only allowed the curia to speak to the group, the Society of Pius X, it did not allow full communion. After the Pope was attacked by Catholics and non-Catholics alike, PTWF immediately contacted the Cardinal Secretary of State to issue a press release explaining this subtle, yet vital difference in terms. The press release was issued and calmed the attacks. Pope Benedict gratefully acknowledged the intervention of Pave the Way Foundation.

Aid to Migrant Workers in North Carolina

Aid to Migrant Workers in North Carolina

PTWF Youth Directors Kirsten and Heather Keleher initiated a project to aid North Carolina seasonal agricultural migrant workers. North Carolina has one of the nation’s largest population of seasonal migrant farm workers. They arrive to work with next to nothing beyond basic living needs. Following the PTWF mantra, Heather and Kirsten have been identifying basic goods needed by these hard working people and building Welcome Packages for them, containing supplies.

“Four years and over 4,400 migrant farm workers served.

Heather and Kirsten Keleher, Pave the Way Foundation’s Youth Directors, founded Migrant Ministry in 2014 to provide Welcome Packages to North Carolina’s migrant farm worker population.

Standing in the shadow of the Vatican in 2013, as Pope Francis spread a message of love transcending all differences and compassion for those who leave their homes in search of better lives, the Keleher family began to ask how they could make a difference in the lives of those a little closer to home. Natives of North Carolina, where the migrant farm worker population is the sixth largest in the United States, Heather and Kirsten found their calling. After meeting Pope Francis with Father Hector LaChapelle through Pave the Way Foundation in February 2015, their mission was solidified.

By organizing drives in churches, schools, neighborhoods, universities, and communities across the state of North Carolina, Migrant Ministry collects items that the migrant farm workers need when they come from Mexico and Central America on crowded buses with limited belongings. Through strategic partnerships, Migrant Ministry has increased the number of farm workers reached every year since its inception.

What will the future bring for Migrant Ministry?

Migrant Ministry strives to reach more than 1,800 men in our 2018-2019 year, expand drives to a larger number of schools and churches, and recruit high school students to become leaders in planning and executing drives in their communities.

Four years later, Migrant Ministry is going strong. We look forward to all that the next four years will bring!”

Working to Re-open the Halki Seminary in Turkey

Working to Re-open the Halki Seminary in Turkey

In 1971, the Turkish government closed the Halki seminary (Heybeliada), the oldest and most important religious educational institution in the Christian Orthodox Church, creating a grave crisis.

This followed earlier Turkish Government decrees affecting the Patriarchate, including a requirement that the Patriarch must be a Turkish citizen and that the Turkish Government can veto the election of a new Patriarch. Previous Turkish Governments had objected to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople exercising his rights as the spiritual leader of more than 300 million Christian Orthodox faithful (the second largest Christian denomination in the world.) The government tried to restrict his leadership to only the tiny Orthodox community that exists in Turkey and confiscated Church properties in Turkey. This was a reversal of several centuries of much greater tolerance.

Although Turkey is an Islamic country, the government closed all Muslim schools as well, in an effort to secularize the school system. As the only Christian Orthodox seminary in Turkey Halki, was closed as “collateral damage.”

In May 2012, Pave the Way Foundation sent 5 letters to the Turkish government advancing a Muslim request for Halki’ s reopening, along with its religious justification. The request was based on a Covenant of Protection for the “people of the book” (a term used to describe Jews and Christians) guaranteed by the hand-printed signature of the Prophet Muhammad in 628 AD. The Prophet Muhammed, through his covenant, guarantees Islamic protection of Christians and their churches from all of his followers until the end of time.

Our letters were received by the Prime Minister, the President, the Ambassadors to the United Nations, the United States and the European Union in May, 2012. We were told that our request was being looked upon very favorable. On July 5, 2012, Professor Mehmet Gormez, the highest Muslim authority in Turkey, made an unprecedented, historical visit to  Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I. On that day, he embraced the Patriarch and called for the reopening of the Halki seminary in the name of Islam and stated:
“As the Religious Affairs Directorate, we see non-Muslim citizens living in Turkey as an integral part of this country. Regarding religious freedoms — freedom of religion, freedom to receive an education and the sacredness of places of worship — we demand for them the same rights that we demand for ourselves. We think it is a fundamental right for people from every ethnicity and religion not only in our country but also in every part of the world to practice their religion freely, educate their children in accordance with their beliefs and raise their own theologians,”

Religious Affairs Directorate President Mehmet Gormez and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I hug each other in front of the İstanbul-based Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate on Thursday.

Pave the Way Foundation is proud of the role we played in this advance towards religious tolerance “paving the way” to improved relations. We are honored that our Muslim partners have trusted us and have participated in this initiative. We all collectively look forward to the opening of the Greek Orthodox Halki (Heybeliada) Seminary, which will show the world that the Turkish government is truly interested in religious tolerance.

Below is the charter of rights granted to the Christians, on which we based our letter requesting the reopening of the seminary, signed with the hand print of the Prophet Muhammed Ibn Abdullah.

In 628 CE, a delegation from St. Catherine’s Monastery came to Prophet Muhammed and requested his protection.

He responded by granting them a charter of rights, which are reproduced below in their entirety. St. Catherine’s Monastery is located at the foot of Mt. Sinai and is the world’s oldest monastery.

Translation:

“This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.

Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by God! I hold out against anything that displeases them.

No compulsion is to be on them. Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries. No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims’ houses.

Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God’s covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate.

No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight. The Muslims are to fight for them. If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray. Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.

No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day (end of the world).”

Below, Gary Krupp updates His Beatitude Theophilos III, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, of our effort to reopen Halki. It was Theophilos who first alerted us to this obstacle between the Greek Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Turkish government.

With the intercession of His Beatitude, Theophilos III, PTWF was able to obtain two more manuscripts reaffirming Muhammad’s order to protect the Christians and their Churches until the end of days. Special gratitude to Dr. Nicholas Fyssas, Supervisor of the Sinaitic Archive of Monuments, Mount Sinai Foundation.
